Reading the Reports page

"How's the calf shed going?" Ask three farmers, get three vibes. "Good." "Battling." "Fine, I think." Reports is the page that turns those vibes into actual numbers — and, more importantly, into decisions. It's also the page you open every quarter to check whether the changes you made last quarter are actually working.

Choosing a date range

Date chips sit under the Reports heading. Everything below respects the chip you pick (except a few live snapshot figures).

• This FY / Last FY — Australian financial year (1 July – 30 June).
• Last 7 days / Last 30 days — the current mob.
• Last 90 days — a calving season.
• Last 12 months — year-on-year benchmarks.
• All time — cumulative.
• Custom — pick your own from and to dates.

What the page actually shows

1. Three questions at the top

Are calves surviving? Are they growing? Is the work getting done? Each tile has a traffic light versus target. Survival is to 60 days. Growth is average daily gain. Work done is feeds logged versus expected, plus litres fed in the period.

2. Key benchmarks

A row of coloured boxes versus industry targets, with a 12-month trend line. Open a box for the hint. This is the “how are we tracking” strip — not a six-section list.

3. Deaths and causes

A deaths-by-day chart, mortality by month versus a 5% target, and deaths by cause. If most deaths are respiratory, housing or ventilation is the problem, not nutrition.

4. Colostrum and Brix

Recording rate, average Brix, and how many tested under 22%. Target: 95%+ recorded, average Brix at or above 22%, low-Brix under 10%. That under-22% figure is a quality proxy — not a blood test for failure of passive transfer.

The 5-minute weekly review

1. Open Reports, set to Last 30 days (or This FY if you prefer the season).
2. Scan the three tiles at the top — anything jumped?
3. Deaths and causes — any new deaths? Cause chart telling a story?
4. Treatments — any drug or type spike? Why?
5. Colostrum — still over 95% recorded?
6. Make one change for the week ahead based on what you saw.

Don't try to fix everything at once. One disciplined change a week compounds into a better shed by quarter-end.

The quarterly deeper read

Set to Last 90 days. Compare with the previous quarter:

• Has mortality moved?
• Has ADG moved?
• Has antibiotic use moved?
• Have you improved colostrum capture?

If you work with a vet or calf-rearing consultant, this is the page to send them. They'll spot patterns faster than you will.

Quirks worth knowing

• Reports is read-only — only as good as your data entry.
• Born-in-period numbers sit with mortality, not in a separate "Calving report".
• For per-calf data, open the calf passport. For a calf list, use Calves → Export.
• Money & tax covers sales and stock, not a drug-cost report.

One thing to take away

The point of Reports isn't to admire numbers. It's to spot the one thing in your shed that's costing you most, fix it, and check next month that the fix worked. Use the page as a tool for monthly decisions, not daily reading.
